Ice

Method 1: Gel ice

Supplies:

  • Gel wax
  • Ice mold
  • Microwave safe container
  • Microwave

Melt the candle gel in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time until it becomes liquid. Pour the melted gel into an ice mold. Let sit until firm. Remove gel from the ice mold.

Method 2: Plastic ice (best made in an outdoor oven or open lots of windows)

Supplies:

  • Clear plastic beads
  • Ice mold
  • Aluminum foil
  • Oven with plenty of ventilation
  • Sandpaper and/or file

Line your mold with aluminum foil creating a column about an inch or so higher than the top of the mold. The reason for this is so that you can extend the mold to get the size of ice you want because the beads melt down a lot.

Next, fill your mold with clear plastic beads.  Make sure to fill the mold all the way to the top of the foil.   Place the mold into a preheated 450 degree oven. Ideally, this would work best if you have a toaster oven or other portable oven that you can take outside for this process. I did not have that option so I made these inside with many opened windows.

After you place the mold in the oven, check on them about every ten minutes to see the progress until the beads have completely melted. Once they’ve melted, remove from the oven and let cool completely. Remove the ice from the molds and use sandpaper or a file to smooth out any rough edges.
